Exposure to Sexual Content in Popular Movies Predicts Sexual Behavior in Adolescence

Science News

ScienceDaily (July 17, 2012) — Intuitively it simply makes sense: exposure to sexual content in movies at an early age probably influences adolescents’ sexual behavior. And yet, even though a great deal of research has shown that adolescents who watch more risky behaviors in popular movies, like drinking or smoking, are more likely to drink and smoke themselves, surprisingly little research has examined whether movies influence adolescents’ sexual behaviors.

Until now.

Over six years, psychological scientists examined whether or not seeing sex on the big screen translates into sex in the real world for adolescents. Their findings, which are to be published in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science, revealed not only that it did but also explained some of the reasons why.

‘Toddlers and Tiaras’ and sexualizing 3-year-olds

BettyJean Downing Kling

After 35+ years pushing my “Sexualizing America” thesis- it is good to see others finally calling it by the same name and realizing we must do something about this! To read more about my lifelong work simply put the words “Sexualizing America” in my search and you will find a miriad of articles I have run year after year on this subject.

Meanwhile – I would love to give a shout-out to CNN and Melissa Henson for  the information below.

By Melissa Henson, Special to CNN

Editor’s note: Melissa Henson is the director of communications and public education for the Parents Television Council, a nonpartisan education organization advocating responsible entertainment. Watch Henson on CNN’s “Newsroom” live at 2:40 p.m. ET Tuesday.

(CNN) — TLC’s “Toddlers and Tiaras” has been mired in controversy since it debuted in 2009, and much of the distaste for the series stemmed from concerns about whether we were feeding the stage mothers’ desire for attention, or about the insensitivity in taping and televising children in the middle of a meltdown or temper tantrum. But whether you think child beauty pageants are just a chance for little girls to play dress-up, or a training ground for superficial, self-centered princesses in the making, everyone should agree that sexualizing a 3-year-old little girl is wrong.

In what was likely a misguided effort to gin up publicity and ratings for the show, TLC released footage of a 3-year-old contestant dressed as the prostitute played by Julia Roberts in the 1990 film “Pretty Woman.” This stupidity came just one week after TLC — still known to many as The Learning Channel — was forced to pull its Facebook page because of the deluge of negative comments over an episode that featured a little girl dressed up to look like Dolly Parton, complete with padded bust and buttocks.

Sexualizing America 3 of 12

Another Rant By: BettyJean Kling

Give me one good reason for these ads? Sex sells? If so what is sexy about women being captured enslaved or bruised? Tell me who is buying these products- they are very expensive products and these are very expensive ads- – these is what we are force feeding our citizens – our children are getting bombarded with these images. Haven’t you seen them? They are in magazines in Dr. offices- in the newspapers, on bus and subway walls. Your kids have seen them – they know all these makers – every one!

What are they selling and why are they selling it this way and why are they spending this much to do it? And why are our females spending so much to buy it? Why?

Because they are used to it – they have been raised on it – they know no other way. We have failed them – both the girls and the boys. Just as women under Sharia law allow themselves to be covered from head to toes and to be beaten and treated as animals – and just as their husbands beat them and treat them like dogs our women expect to be treated like this and our men expect to react like this. It is our fault- we have raised our children to accept this as normal!

Look at these ads – is this normal to you? When did we stop having any respect for ourselves in this country? When did we lower our standards this low?

Why is this woman's face bruised to sell a purse? And why is it wrapped around the head of her naked body?

Why is this women bound and gagged and this is total living? for whom- her captors?

And what is this supposed to be selling and to whom? What a degrading ad- what woman is buying a purse that depocts her as a horse ith a bit in her mouth?

Barely old enough to be out of softball practice or a teen bedroom - he soon tires of sex games in favor of Game Boy and can't even un glue long enough to release her or pay attention that she wants loose? ?Is she free to even ask?

So what pray tell are they selling here that warrents this scene?

A picture is worth a thousand words . I have thousands of these pictures – My photo essay will be 12 parts and have 200 photos. By that time- you should be convinced that we must unite and mobilize against this outrage! We are not lower than animals- We deserve respect- but before we can ask for it – we must respect ourselves. Think about that statment!

Sexploitation of seven year olds

The mother of all rants by BettyJean Kling

Where the hell are the parents of these girls? They should be deemed unfit!

Of all the crap I have seen pass my old and foolish eyes – this – yes this is by far the greatest piece of crap I have yet to see. Yet this is what our children are being normalized into daily. And pray tell can you guess what our seven year old boys are thinking? I can tell you what the pedophiles are thinking and it is very clear what they are doing. They are grabbing children out of their beds and off of bus stops and from play grounds and raping and killing them and it has to be in part all because of sexploitation like this. The lyrics are below and obviously sexual to go with the moves and the clothes or lack thereof.

Give me one good reason – just one– that the audience was screaming with delight about this sexualization of little girls who should be thinking of something else- certainly not running from man to man?

If you or your friends are not convinced about the rampant sexualization of children in our culture then surely this video will persuade you. By following this link, you will be able to watch a You Tube video of dance performed purportedly by seven-year-old girls:

Honestly, this dance is utterly vulgar and repulsive and literally brought me to tears. I hate to send it, but just like with the Holocaust when we see the pictures/videos we can no longer deny what is happening.

I hope you will be outraged. I hope you will see that by sexualizing our children in this manner we are simply grooming them for sexual victimization, and for possible exploitation in the commercial sex industry. I hope you will be moved to fight for America’s children. I hope you will be motivated to reclaim common decency. This has got to stop!

Abolition!

Single Ladies Lyrics

All the single ladies (7x)

Now put your hands up
Up in the club, we just broke up
I’m doing my own little thing
you Decided to dip but now you wanna trip
Cuz another brother noticed me
I’m up on him, he up on me
dont pay him any attention
cuz i cried my tears, GAVE three good years
Ya can’t be mad at me

[Chorus]
Cuz if you liked it then you should have put a ring on it
If you liked it then you shoulda put a ring on it
Don’t be mad once you see that he want it
If you liked it then you shoulda put a ring on it

wo oh ooh oh oh ooh oh oh ooh oh oh oh x2

(Chorus)Cuz if you liked it then you should have put a ring on it
If you liked it then you shoulda put a ring on it
Don’t be mad once you see that he want it
If you liked it then you shoulda put a ring on it

I got gloss on my lips, a man on my hips
hold me tighter than my Dereon jeans
acting up, drink in my cup
I couldnt care less what you think
I need no permission, did I mention
Dont pay him any attention
Cuz you had your turn
But now you gonna learn
What it really feels like to miss me

(Chorus)

Cuz if you liked it then you should have put a ring on it
If you liked it then you shoulda put a ring on it
Don’t be mad once you see that he want it
If you liked it then you shoulda put a ring on it

woo oh ooh oh oh ooh oh oh ooh oh oh oh 2x

Don’t treat me to the things of this world
I’m not that kind of girl
Your love is what I prefer, what I deserve
Is a man that makes me, then takes me
And delivers me to a destiny, to infinity and beyond
Pull me into your arms
Say I’m the one you WANT
If you don’t, you’ll be alone
And like a ghost I’ll be gone

All the single ladies (7x)
Now put your hands up
woo oh ooh oh oh ooh oh oh ooh
oh oh oh 2x

Cuz if you liked it then you should have put a ring on it
If you liked it then you shoulda put a ring on it
Don’t be mad once you see that he want it
If you liked it then you shoulda put a ring on it woo oh ooh 2x

Sexualizing America 2 of 12

Another Rant By: BettyJean Kling

I have spent 30 plus years stressing how dangerous the objectification and sexualization of females would be. My series is called Sexualizing America 1-12. Our Bodacious Blogger,  Georgia Platts PhD, is also doing a series and  I am proud she happens to be  running it at about the same time.

I will be posting an ongoing series (interspersed with other topics) to discuss these questions, among others:

  • How do men and women experience sex differently?
  • What affects sexual experience and why do American women typically enjoy sex less than men?
  • How do differences and misunderstandings affect relationships between women and men?
  • What are the benefits and costs of the so-called male and female ways of sexuality?
  • What can women learn from men and what can men learn from women?

To understand all this, we’ll need to explore things you might not expect, like how objectification can dampen a woman’s sexual experience, even as it heightens a man’s. Or, we still rank men above women in our society, and this ends up diminishing women’s sexual interest in ways that are not immediately obvious – though they should be.

Meanwhile, men, if you’re not getting a lot of sex, don’t take it personally. And don’t take it out on women.

I believe part of the results she may glean may very well be the disappointment between what both sexes were expecting and what reality actually yields.

Look at what media has said to both males and females in the last 30 plus years- (See Sexualizing America 1-12) and clearly typical females do not enjoy being objectified, bruised, hog tied, caged or beaten. On the other hand as she points out  (see Why Don’t Women Like Sex As Much As Men? ) the males who believe the lies they hear and the fallacies they see must be angry not to receive the so-called benefits they think are free for the taking.

And now for the photo essay:
These are billboards your children see at the bus/train station or driving down the hyway.

This is advertising Nurses!

Pssssst - what would we do without him to open our minds?

And we wonder why Sex us always on their minds? Or why women seem to use sex to get their attention? they have been breed to think this way purposefully!
There are no words to describe this one! But the question remains - why do we stand silents and allow ourselves to be used this way?
