Sexual assault, rape at OWS sites

Connie Kafka

It appears to me that the collusion to hide alleged incidents of sexual assault and rape at Occupy Wall St sites could create a serious setback in efforts to curb violence against women. In their concerted effort to falsely paint OWS as a benign, if vague, grassroots populist movement of  ‘have nots’ versus ‘haves,’ the national media apparently is ignoring numerous crimes being committed at OWS sites across the nation, particularly crimes of alleged sexual assault and rape (75 out of 128 total known incidents so far). The OWS organizers reportedly insist that such crimes be handled ‘internally,’ not wanting their movement to receive ‘bad press.’ The movement organizers appear not only to be quashing the efforts of victims and witnesses trying to report these crimes to law enforcement, but appear to go so far as to condemn, isolate, ostracize and even threaten victims and witnesses. If not for local news, citizen journalists and the blogosphere, such crimes likely would go completely unreported and the victims left without any voice at all. The link below is to a blog that has been documenting the OWS crime situation as covered by local news and citizen journalists. I’m including the link for an overview which, to my knowledge, is not available elsewhere.

  1. I will blog about this and give you a hat tip. Keep up the good work and get folk to back this stuff up with pictures.
Let’s do what the press will Not.
It is up to us now to be citizen reporters.
I’m up for it- let’s go.
I am just over the bridge from NYC- I promise to do my part.

  2. Thanks for posting, BJ. I will continue to monitor the situation via BigGovernment and other blogs. Let’s hope this spurs some action. No matter what one’s views re OWS, to allow the apparently rampant sexual violence to go unreported and to allow the organizers to ‘punish’ the victims and essentially get away with demanding that they simply ‘sit down and shut up,’ is completely against everything that women’s rights advocates claim to stand for.

  3. Thanks for bringing it to our attention- I will make a trip out there this week and see what I can get pictures of.

ElMarco got some great pictures of these folks out in Denver- http://www.lookingattheleft.com/2011/10/evil-clowns-and-anti-capitalist-revolution-in-denver/

This post takes a close look at the leftist lawfare campaign of uncivil agitation as it unfolded in Denver last week. Denver, like other cities that have Occupy manifestations, is faced by a core of protesters from anarchist groups, labor unions, and communist organizations, often obscuring their affiliations, mixed in with a mishmash of confused students, concerned citizen activists, children, and all sorts of evil clowns.

  4. Update. Perhaps Bloomberg is beginning to wake up. Let’s hope community leaders in other OWS sites will do the same. H/T The Crawdad Hole blog
