Terry O’Neil fronts for the Dems again: Using ERA as a partisan contrivance

Another Rant by BettyJean Kling

Before I discredit the National Organization for Women (NOW) and its national leadership under Terry O’Neil  I feel compelled to mention NOW is full of many really fantastic women who are faithful, sincere and hard working souls who have dedicated their lives to their sisters. I am and will forever be indebted to all those who have sincerely worked for the best interests of womankind.  I know this will not endear me to many that I call friend but I too must do what I feel is necessary and just.  I am Sorry to those women I consider my friends, sisters and or colleagues who are/were leaders and Presidents of the various state chapters. There are many wonderful women in NOW – forgive me if I fail to mention you by name – I am on a deadline:  Marcia Pappas, Renee Beeker, Linda Marie Sacks, Linda Mahoney, Paulie Abeles, and others.

These women are tireless advocates for Women’s rights, Battered Women, Family Courts and Domestic violence and I would give my eyesight to have them in and running my non partisan organization where ALL women count and no party will EVER play any role in what we do for all women! Where finances will not be used to raise more finances to run things to raise more finances but will be used to actually help those in need not run the organization or to hobnob among the politicians for favors. We don’t need favors or to play the old boy game – we are entitled. We are the majority in a free Republic! Let’s stop talking right and left Terry- let’s start talking right and wrong! Screw the Dem and the Republicans. Stand shoulder to should with all women!

Shame on Terry O’Neil and NOW. If Equal Rights is your issue and it damned well should be Women across the nation should be calling her out, cancelling their membership and refusing to donate. We are being used in the political game and it is about time women stop using women and stop allowing women to use other women.

We deserve better than this. FreeMeNow has been doing shows all week and writing blogs all week on the ERA – we didn’t wait for Scalia’s statement to fall on the day the Republicans took over Congress to ignite the ERA as a partisan debate. We debated it on the day The Dems had full control and let us down and NOW, the so-called Women’s groups and Ms. Magazine told us “This is what a feminist looks like”. I for one am sick of the few crumbs they throw us

A little over two years ago I did my damndest to turn NOW around. I went on a mission to recruit my members to join NOW and help turn them from a Leftist organization into a true National Organization for all Women. I was sick to death of Kim Gandy and her lack of interest in pushing for the Equal Rights Amendment.  The Democrats have been in power for 4 years and when President Obama was elected they had all three seats of power and yet NOW under Kim Gandy and now Terry O’Neil still did not push for the ERA. Instead this is the letter she sent out asking for help and money:

From: nowpresident@now.org
Subject: The chance of a lifetime
Date: Thu, 15 Jan 2009 10:27:56 -0500

 Dear Member,

You can help NOW implement an ambitious women’s rights agenda for this first   year of the Obama administration. Because he has asked for our advice as he shapes his administration, and we have leadership in both houses of Congress in support of women’s rights, we have the chance of a lifetime. Just think what we might accomplish for women. For starters:

  • Improving the Family and Medical Leave Act to include more workers and begin to implement paid leave.
Passing equal pay laws that have real teeth.
Strengthening and expanding the Violence Against Women Act.
Ensuring health care for all (universal, single-payer, of course!)

NOW has been actively engaged with President-elect Obama’s transition team on a variety of issues affecting the well-being of women and their families. Your contribution will help us craft new legislative strategies and expand the expertise and capacity of our policy and communications staff to ensure that your efforts and ours are carried forward to victory.
We all worked hard to help elect one of the most progressive governments in memory. I know that you’re committed to women’s equality, and you can help NOW be its strongest at this critical moment of opportunity and hope.

The time for hope is NOW.
The time for change is NOW.
And the time for equality is NOW.

I look forward to communicating with you throughout the year ahead about our successes, but we need your support to make that success possible. I’m excited about what we can accomplish together.

For equality,
Kim A. Gandy
NOW President

P.S. If you respond to this message with a contribution of $50 or more, I will send you a free copy of our popular 2009 Love Your Body wall calendar. It’s a great way to enjoy this new year for women’s rights.

We responded as did all our readers who we had lobbied and now we saying “ I told you so”.

Tell NOW how you feel – we did!– Posted on January 16, 2009 by freemenow  –

We told her in no uncertain terms and then went on a mission to replace her with someone who would!

With all due respect, calling for passage of the ERA is what I would call ambitious, anything less is exactly as you called it just for starters and quite frankly that is just not good enough. If that is best you and the Obama team have come up with – it is far short of what is due American women. Moreover, it is insulting to suggest that this is our ‘chance in a time’ and yet have not even asked for their support for a Constitutional Amendment for Women’s Rights!

What were you thinking Kim? You stated “Just think what we might accomplish for women” I have- but have you? I am not willing to wait years while we lose more and more rights just to be equal to men- why are you willing to wait one more day? And how dare you sign this letter—For Equality?

I campaigned for her – Instead of building my own non partisan group I tried to build NOW in hopes of …

NOW members fail to reward failed policies! – Posted on June 22, 2009 by freemenow –

I am the founder of The Majority United. I campaigned for Terry O’Neill and I am damned proud of that. I supported Sarah Palin and I am damned proud of that too! I am especially proud that I campaigned for increasing NOW membership since January 2009 because ALL women need to unite and need an unbiased non partisan woman’s group.

From a reader:

NOW is a deeply divided organization with questionable financial practices including the NOW Foundation transfers to the NOW organization. There is something seriously wrong when three top officers who barely do anything receive salaries of about $3 million while victims of Honor Killings, domestic violence, media verbal slander, all forms of slavery, etc.  get no help and Hillary got ZERO support from this group as well. They have a lot of fixing to do.

Look at the membership. It is 100% Democratic and 0% Republican. In other words, it has been functioning as an arm of the Democratic Party higher-ups, doing whatever their male chiefs told them to do. HOW IS THAT A FEMINIST ORGANIZATION? NOW needs to expand to let in all women while not compromising its basic principles. Otherwise, this organization will continue to be more about dirty Dem. politics than a true women’s group. The new leadership has a chance to make REAL change only if they are not Obama or Democratic Party puppets.

Terry appeared on my show prior to the election and she personally promised she would put ERA at the top of the list.

I attended with 7 friends that I managed to drag in from all over the country and I am proud to say the Terry won the election by a mere 8 votes! 8 votes! I would like to think – no – I know my vote and those of my sever friends that I lobbied for months and months – counted!

Will you join me NOW  Posted on June 23, 2009 by freemenow –

I was reluctant to rejoin and try to change NOW from within as were many of you.  Then I went to the NOW conference/election. Now I’m asking you to help us build on this opportunity to be heard nationwide again…

Under Terry O’Neill’s leadership, the team of Bonnie Grabenhofer, Erin Matson, and Allendra Letsome will not rest until women – all women – have equal rights and enjoy parity in every facet of society. Terry is serious about getting women into the constitution and wants now more than ever for this to be your organization. She is committed to making NOW relevant to every woman in every way it’s what she does, right, it’s her strong point going back to the grassroots, and her inclusive style includes listening to the membership. …

The vote was close, however. We won it by only 8 votes. We are now being challenged on the blogs in the most divisive of ways. We have in our hands this opportunity to grab the golden ring. This is an up and running national organization and it can be ours and stay ours for the joining. NOW is a member driven organization. It is in our hands but only if we increase our numbers and stay in the majority.

So please folks, a massive membership drive is underway to send an enormous message that we the women of the United States of America demand to be taken seriously and we demand to be heard this time. We need to rise like the Phoenix and show them what we’ve got, ladies. We are not done yet!  Oh, NO—we are not done yet!

Never has it been more important for us to come together and be heard – never have we had such an opportunity to walk into a national organization and build it back up to what it was meant to be. Now is our chance- let’s not lose the momentum. We are the majority today help us stay that way- they only sure way to fail is not to even try!

Help me send a message to NOW and the media that we are ready willing and able to take control of our own destiny and speak up! We are mad as hell and we are NOT going to take it anymore! Let’s join NOW and make it clear that we are here to stay. Please visit the NOW website and find your state and join your local chapter – or start one!

Never has it been more important for us to come together and be heard – never have we had such an opportunity to walk into a national organization and build it back up to what it was meant to be. Now is our chance- let’s not lose the momentum. We are the majority today help us stay that way- they only sure way to fail is not to even try.

To date I, believe she attended one major ERA function at the beginning and as “ the team … will not rest until women – all women – have equal rights and enjoy parity in every facet of society”  their letter 15 Jan 2009 didn’t even broach the subject!

Bipartisans reintroduce ERA today – Posted on July 21, 2009 by freemenow

Except for the new leadership at NOW, I do not see all the women’s groups jumping out covering this story today, what liberal blogs did choose to cover it – chose to bill it as a Dem bill.  Please note a search on Google – does not bring up any MSM news stories on this- Women’s eNews bills it as a democratic bill but this did not seen to make very much news today- come on gals let’s shake some trees damned it!

Please note Representatives Maloney and Biggert reintroduced the bill a Democrat and a Republican along with others.   http://maloney.house.gov/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=1899&Itemid=6

Do you know how many ERA proposals have been sent out since? Ask Terry et al for a ratio of ERA to Abortion newsletter appeals during her term. I find it curious that while the Dems had all three houses – Terry O’Neil from Day 1, was not shouting from the rooftops for the ERA but from Day 2 of the Republican run house she is shouting!

Damned Hypocrite- she is using women as if we are pawns! Damned you Terry O’Neil! If you couldn’t scream and holler for the last two years – shut the hell up now! Leave it to the rest of us who have been out there working our asses off and get your lame ass out of the spotlight because you obviously don’t give a damned about ERA or women’s rights. If you did you would have done something about it in the last two years when the Dems had the power instead of waiting to blame the Republicans for Scalia’s interpretation of the 14th amendment.

Those of us screaming at O’Neil since we elected her have told her the same for over two years! Shame on Terry O’Neil for using ERA and Women in such an obviously self serving bullshit display of partisan politics. You are nothing more than a political hack Terry- you are a Moll for the Dems. If you knew anything at all you would know the 14th Amendment was proposed in 1866 then ratified in 1868 to protect the freedman from the abrogation of his rights by the Southern states and never intended women to be included as equals.

Don’t blame Scalia or the new Republican House-instead look in the mirror and ask yourself where the hell have you been for the last two years? I heartily object to the swill you and NOW has been feeding women since you’ll sold out to the man on the left!

Again – I am Sorry to all the many wonderful women in NOW the tireless advocates for Women’s rights, Battered Women, Family Courts and Domestic violence and I would do anything to have us all on the same side instead of hearing the bitter partisan bullshit come out of any woman’s mouth!

The 26th amendment (granting the right to vote for 18 year-olds) took only 3 months & 8 days to be ratified! Why? Simple! The people demanded it. That was in 1971… before computers, before e-mail, before cell phones, etc.

Of the 27 amendments to the Constitution, seven (7) took 1 year or less to become the law of the land… all because of public pressure.

I’m asking each one of you to forward this message as an Email to a minimum of twenty people on their Address list; in turn ask each of those to do likewise.

In three days, most people in The United States of America will have the message. This is one proposal that really should be passed around.

Proposed: 28th Amendment to the United States Constitution:

“Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex.”

It’s time to write women into The Constitution and it’s time to take us off the bargaining table too! This is a National Embarrassment and a Disgrace! And Terry O’Neil and NOW are a Disgrace to American women nationwide! Read your Constitution and stop brainwashing women!

One Response

  1. I dropped my membership in NOW in 1995 when NOW, under the leadership of Patricia Ireland, dropped its support for the ERA.

Instead ,NOW adopted support for a “feel-good” position paper dubbed the Women’s Equality Amendment. I am now seriously considering rejoining because of Terry O is speaking out for ERA.
