FEAR of Muslims on Airplanes: Are these fears justified?

The Juan Williams statement that got him fired from NPR because CAIR was angry that Juan expressed his own fears about Muslims on airplanes got me thinking

Are these fears justified?

I have my own personal fears of flying justified by 35 years of hijacking, bombings, threats while employed by TWA.

So CAIR is angry at profiling Muslims at airports and people expressing their fears of traveling on airplanes with Muslims. I heard a CAIR member say “people wearing crosses and stars aren’t profiled” and I am thinking if people wearing crosses and stars were hijacking aircrafts then they should be profiled.

So I started researching Hijacking and Bombings of aircraft.

By the time my “field was full” on my phone I found not a one by “crosses and stars” ALL were by Muslims ( I will add the PC, “extremists” to satisfy those who need the disclaimer when ALL is used) So my dilemma was a “full field” of hijacking and bombings by the Religion that wants to be known for PEACE.

So I decided to make my personal point of why I am fearful of Muslims on my airplanes.

All of the incidents have involved me personally.

This is my way of saying to CAIR, “TOO damn bad your angry that people around the world fear Muslims on airplanes.

Muslims have been using airplanes to terrorize and murder for over 37 years”

September 8, 1974, a Boeing 707-331B (tail number N8734) operating as TWA Flight 841 took off from Ben Gurion International Airport, Tel Aviv en route to JFK International Airport, New York City. It was scheduled to land in Athens, followed by Rome, and then proceed to New York. After stopping for 68 minutes in Athens, it departed for Rome. About 30 minutes after takeoff, the plane crashed into the Ionian Sea. The out of control aircraft was observed by crew on the flight deck of Pan Am 110. They watched the aircraft execute a steep climb, the separation of an engine from the wing, and the death spiral. All 79 passengers and nine crew members were killed.

The National Transportation Safety Board determined that the plane was destroyed by a bomb hidden in the cargo hold, which caused structural failure resulting in uncontrollable flight.

Suspicion has fallen on ABU NIDAL and his Islamic terror organization.

“This was the FIRST known instance of a young Arab Muslim boarding an American plane in a suicide mission. predating the September 11 attacks by nearly three decades.

(This was also my first day as a TWA employee.)

In January 2009, the Associated Press published an investigation saying that Khalid Duhham Al-Jawary, responsible for the 1973 New York City bomb plot on the WTC as linked to the bombing of TWA Flight 841. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TWA_Flight_841_(1974

 June 14, 1985

TWA Flight 847 was an international Trans World Airlines flight which was hijacked by the Amal Movement, widely believed to be a nom de guerre for the Islamist Lebanese Shia group Hezbollah, on Friday morning, June 14, 1985, after originating in Cairo, Egypt and was flying from Athens, Greece to Rome, Italy, from where it was scheduled to travel on to London. The aircraft with its passengers and crew endured a three-day intercontinental ordeal during which one passenger, a U.S. Navy diver,Robert Stedham, was murdered. Dozens of passengers were then held hostage over the next two weeks, until released by their captors.

 Hijacking events

Piloted by 58-year-old Captain John Testrake, the Boeing 727, tail number N64339 , departed at 10:10 am, carrying 153 passengers and crew, including flight engineer Benjamin C. Zimmermann,[3] co-pilot Philip G. Maresca, and flight attendant Uli Derickson.

It was commandeered shortly after takeoff by two German-speaking Lebanese men who had smuggled pistols and grenades through the Athens airport security. A third intended hijacker, Ali Atwa, had been bumped from the flight and was later arrested in Greece.

 To Beirut, then Algiers
The plane was diverted from airspace over Greece to the Middle East and made its first stop, for several hours, at the Beirut, Lebanon airport, where 19 passengers were allowed to leave in exchange for fuel. During this time, Lebanon was in the midst of a civil war, and Beirut was divided into sectors controlled by different militias.

On Friday afternoon, the aircraft continued on to Algiers, Algeria in North Africa where 20 passengers were released during a five-hour stop, before heading back to Beirut Friday night.

 Back to Beirut
The Beirut International Airport, surrounded by a Shia neighborhood, had no perimeter security and nearby residents could simply drive onto the runway. During this stop, the hijackers identified an American Navy diver, Robert Stethem, among the passengers. They beat him, shot him in the right temple, and dumped his body out of the plane onto the tarmac. Seven American passengers, who were alleged to have Jewish-sounding surnames, were taken off the jet by Hezbollah and sequestered in Beirut.

 Algiers again, Beirut again
Nearly a dozen armed men joined the hijackers before the plane returned to Algiers on Saturday, June 15, where an additional 65 passengers were released. It returned to Beirut for a third time, landing on Sunday afternoon, June 16, and remained there.

The initial demands of the hijackers included: the release of all 766 mainly Lebanese Shias transferred to Israel in conjunction with Israel’s withdrawal from Lebanon; international condemnation of Israeli military activity in southern Lebanon; condemnation of U.S. actions in the Middle East; and condemnation of the March 8, 1985, car bombing in the Beirut suburb of Bir al Abed earlier that year. The Greek government released the accomplice Ali Atwa and in exchange the hijackers released eight Greek citizens, including Greek pop singer Demis Roussos.

By Monday afternoon, June 17, most of the hostages had been taken from the plane to a secure location. The 40 remaining hostages were held by Nabih Berri, the chief of the Amal militia and the then Minister of Justice in the fractured Lebanon cabinet. One of the hostages was released when he developed heart trouble. The other 39 remained captive until June 30, when they were driven to Syria. The hostages then boarded a U.S. Air Force plane and flew to West Germany. Over the next several weeks, Israel released over 700 Shia prisoners, while maintaining that the prisoners’ release was not related to the hijacking.

The iconic image of this hijacking was the photograph showing a hijacker holding a gun to the pilot’s head (sticking out of the cockpit window) as the pilot is being questioned by reporters. Captain John Testrake.

Flight attendant Uli Derickson was widely credited with calming the hijackers and saving the lives of many passengers. Because her German was the only common language with the hijackers, who spoke poor English, she acted as translator and liaison for most of the ordeal. Notably, she defused a tense situation in Algiers when airport officials refused to refuel the plane without payment by offering her own Shell Oil credit card, which was used to charge about $5,500 for 6,000 gallons of jet fuel, for which she later was reimbursed. She also hid the passports of Jewish passengers so they could not be singled out.

(When this aircraft was repaired it was flown from ST Louis maintenance to Syracuse where I boarded joining TWA flight crew and we flew to JFK.

None of the passengers on board were aware that this was the aircraft shown around the world. The bullet hole outside the cockpit remained covered by a TWA logo.

July 1985
ABU NIDAL terrorists bombed a British Airways ticket office in Madrid, killing one person and injuring twenty-seven. A TWA office also was destroyed. The bombings apparently were in retaliation against President Reagan’s threat the previous day to strike against terrorism.

April 2, 1986
Trans World Airlines Flight 840, registration N54340, was a Boeing 727-231 flying en route from Rome’s Fiumicino Airport to Athens. A bomb was detonated on the aircraft while it was over Argos, Greece, ejecting four American passengers (including a nine-month-old infant) to their deaths below. Five others on the aircraft were injured as the cabin suffered a rapid decompression. The remaining 110 passengers survived the incident as pilot Richard “Pete” Petersen made an emergency landing.

A group calling itself the Arab Revolutionary Cells claimed responsibility, saying it was committed because of “American arrogance” and clashes with Libya in the Gulf of Sidra the week before. Investigators concluded that the bomb contained one pound of plastic explosive. It is suspected it had been placed under the seat cushion on a previous journey by a Lebanese woman (later arrested, never convicted) who worked for the Abu Nidal Organization, which was opposed to the peace process.

Perhaps when airplanes are no longer used as a means to terrorize people by Islamic terrorists…we can begin to relax.

So how about CAIR being angry at those Muslims who use airplanes to terrorize instead of those who fear Muslim terrorists?

  1. It at times is difficult to express bright colored emotions in black and white, this was one of those times.
So many things were left unsaid but perhaps to better understand me, the woman who has been referred to as “Racist white trash” maybe I need to speak not to what was written by reporters who weren’t there but from those who have looked evil right in the eye. Evil for me began over 30 years ago and for me what began as a way to better understand “who are these people and why are they trying to kill me”? First things first, me means American. The target was not TWA nor its employees the target was the American flag that flew on the tail of TWA planes on which I flew. At the time the 2 American flag carriers that flew international were TWA and Pan AM. Targets of a war that very few people at the time including me even knew was a war declared on America. The war was called Jihad and the target was Infidels.
Many things to this day never made sense to me. How does one pray on his knees to his god, Allah and then stand up and force a man to his knees while raising a gun to
His head and shouting “Allah Ackbar” as you murder him?
The search for answers lead me to the Qur’an and more questions and more violence. This violence was not only directed at Americans but at Muslim women. There in the bowels of the earth I found the many “her” and I have spent the last 30 years bringing awareness to “her”..invisible, mutilated, murdered, abused her.
Me, being accused of racism and Islamaphobia?I guess it’s easier to point fingers and name call the woman who has faced the evil you sadly ignore and refuse to acknowledge because your too damn busy calling
me racist because it is easier to be PC than willing to admit and accept the truth that there is a group under the guise of religion that wants to conquer you Infidel and suppress you woman.
its always been and continues to be about awareness.
When I traveled to Afghanistan and filmed the be heading of 3 of your sisters, the stoning of a 15 year old, I wrote “I am not sure what was more profound the sound of her screams or the sound of her silence”
Today I am not sure what is more profound the sound of your ignorance or the sounds of your denial of the truth.

    • Well done good and faithful servant! There are none so blind as those who refuse to see! This is not about hating all Muslims but it is about awarness that those who are evil among them are to be feared- are dangerous and have no qualms about walking freeely among them . What’s more those who are not themselves dangerous – in fact are because they do little to stop them.
My hat is off to the parents who turn their own in – they are the brave- they are the hero Muslims- they are to be trusted – but they are few!
When they stand up ainst the injustice their own radicals do in the name of their God, their religion will they purge their religion of what the radicals bring upon them.

We the terrorized did not label them – – They keep leaving their calling card!

      • Yes, BJ I am reminded of another person who believed “calling cards were left” and how airline security was dependent on using them that information.
Captain John Testrake prior to national exposure was a well know and loved Captain for TWA. You always knew what airplane John was flying on for out of the mass of red and white planes parked at the gates at JFK his stood out. For in his cockpit window were signs, “For Sale, Apartment For Rent, Help Wanted, Out of Order” He gave guided tours to all the kids on his flights. He loved TWA and he loved to fly.
John flew with his Bible and a belief that “it is as it’s suppose to be”. At the time of the hijacking he was nearing retirement and decided to fly international. I am not sure how things would have turned out if another captain was on board. I know the hijackers trusted him and I believe they even admired his courage. I am not sure if it has ever been told but on the frequent take off and landings they placed a grenade in his lap.
On approach to Algeria the airport turned out the runway lights, the aircraft was out of fuel and he got on the radio and said “turn on the damn lights, they’re beating my passengers and I am landing NOW with or without the lights” and the lights went on.
On the flight from Syracuse to JFK, to bring our plane home he commented on the murder of Robert Stedham the one thought he had was “somewhere in the USA a mothers heart is breaking, how many hearts will break before we comprehend they’ve left us a calling card, we know exactly who they are and we need to keep them off our airplanes”.
He retired from TWA and spent his retirement speaking to the need for airline security especially positive passenger ID and a computerized no fly list. His belief “if they know we are looking for them it will make it harder for them to board our airplanes and use them as weapons”
John didn’t live to see our airplanes used as weapons on 911 John Testrake passed away Feb 6 1995 at the age of 68 from cancer. I thought of him that day and “Broken Hearts” and I wondered what he would of thought about our failure to prevent 19 hijackers all carrying the same calling card 25 years after it was first presented on TWA flt 841.

        RIP Captain Testrake

        • Thank you Barbara- and let us never forget the calling cards!

  4. Wonderful Post BJK and Barb,

I remember a number of these incidents very well
    in my young life—–

To hell with PC——–and our UN sucks as much as
    our congress critters / Senate

    • Sometimes you just gotta say – common sense comes before PC.
PC is gone amuck and your are so right about the UN.
that is another problem we had better take care of after we take back control of OUR government.
