Pay Raises for Lawmakers

Americans throughout this great nation is now, making it their responsibility to become more involved in what this administration and those in congress is up to.

Americans have sat back and given those who respresent the American people the “power” to act in our best interest.

Truth be told, many of us have been “asleep at the wheel”, including me!

In a time when the economy is “spiraling out of control” and the American people are “tightening their belts” and the jobless rate is climbing ever higher and presently hovering at 10% and we are still waiting for jobs and responsible homeowners have lost their homes and many of us have had to resort to extending our credit to pay for the necessities, along with being taxed for everything and we have those who represent the people, giving themselves “unearned pay raises”!

Back in 2008, they all knew that we were heading for difficult economic times that they all helped to create and yet quietly they still set themselves up to receive their “automatic pay raises” in 2009 and left their constituents to “fend for themselves”!

I find it a disgrace, that the men and women of congress have chosen to enhance their lives at a time when the American people, their constituents are at a disadvantage.

Pay Raises for Lawmakers Angers Watchdog Groups

By Stephen Clark –

Each lawmaker is due for a $4,700 cost-of-living wage hike starting in January, which will amount to a total cost of $2.5 million for taxpayers

They received this pay raise in Jan. of 2009.

“We the People” are left to “twist in the wind” while these corrupt politicians have given themselves their automatic pay raise that we, their constituents are picking up the tab on,  to the tune of $2.5 million!

As Americans across the country grapple with one of the worst financial crises since the Great Depression, members of Congress quietly are getting a pay raise.

Our country at the time was “heading full steam ahead into a Recession” and congress already knew this.  Yet they “Quietly” voted to okay their pay raise.  This is their “modus operandi”, their method of operation.  Consider all of the “backroom deals” that goes on in congress.  “Cornhusker Kickback”, “The Louisiana Purchase”, just to name a few.  “Connivers” comes to mind.  I find it appalling that they should better their lives at the expense of their constituents.

Each lawmaker’s annual salary is due for a $4,700 cost-of-living increase starting in January, which will amount to a cost to taxpayers of $2.5 million in 2009, infuriating watchdog groups.

Yes, they can all sit back an wonder what went wrong when they are all out on the streets looking for another job in an already jobless market that they all helped to create!   Voter Imposed Term Limits, that’s the ticket!

“Members of Congress don’t deserve one additional dime of taxpayer money in 2009,” said Tom Schatz, president of the Council for Citizens Against Government Waste.

Automatic pay raises for congress should be done away with!  The economy is ever changing and congress’s pay should be adjusted to meet the economic climate or we will have a repeat of those who should know better than to vote themselves a pay raise in a Recession.

“While thousands of Americans are facing layoffs and downsizing, Congress should be mortified to accept a raise,” he said in a written statement.

It is obvious to the American people that congress only cares about themselves.  This is why they will meet the “hand of justice” in the November midterm elections!

Members of Congress make an average of $169,300 a year, with Congressional leaders making slightly more. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Cailf., makes $217,400, while the majority and minority leaders in the House and Senate each make $188,100.

The raise will increase the average salary to about $174,000, up 2.8 percent.

Did anyone receive their COLA this year?  We all know what the answer to that question is, NO!  So then, why did congress get a cost of living allowance when people on social security didn’t?

Pelosi’s and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s offices did not respond to’s requests for comment.

Surprise, surprise, no comment from these two.  You normally cannot get these two to zip it!

Pay raises for public officials, whether at the federal, state or local level, usually spark outrage among taxpayer advocates. But the deepening financial crisis has led even a few lawmakers to object.

Earlier this year, Rep. Harry Mitchell, a first-term Democrat from Arizona, introduced legislation that would have stopped the automatic pay adjustments from kicking in for members next year. But the bill, which drew 34 cosponsors, died in committee.

Two other members of Congress, Rep. Dan Burton, R-Ind, and Rep. Gresham Barrett, R-SC, also tried to block the wages but didn’t get very far. Burton plans to return his pay increase to the Treasury Department.

“As we face the most challenging economic crisis in our history, and with many Americans and Hoosiers enduring personal financial hardships, I am opposed to any pay increase for members of Congress in 2009,” he said in a written statement. He said he’ll try again next year.

“We the People” have our work cut out for us.  It will no longer be in the Parties hand, Special Interest , Lobbyist or the politicians themselves.  The People will have their say in “the courts of public opinion” and the words “your fired” comes to mind!

Lawmakers have received automatic raises since 1989. As part of an ethics bill, Congress gave up its ability to accept pay for speeches and made annual cost-of-living pay increases automatic unless lawmakers voted otherwise.

Lawmakers have rejected pay raises six times since then, most recently last year, when Democrats, newly elected to the majority, had vowed to block an increase in their paychecks until Congress raised the minimum wage.

For the past eight years, Rep. Jim Matheson, D-Utah, has been trying to end the automatic salary hike for House members, arguing that spending priorities in a time of war and economic crisis do not include pay raises for lawmakers.

Matheson wants to put the automatic pay raises to a vote

“At a time when people are losing their jobs, their homes and their retirement, I think the least we could do is openly debate whether we should take the pay increase this year or do some belt-tightening,” he said in a written statement.

As he has done for the past eight years, Matheson plans to donate his pay raise to charity, his spokeswoman said.

At the time, Democratic congressman Matheson seemed to “see the evil of their ways”!

Update:  This is the congressman whose brother Scott Matheson was recently appointed to a federal judgeship by the administration.  Congressman Matheson originally voted against Obama care and now he is suddenly vacilating with his vote.

This is a prime example of why they must all be FIRED!   This is what happens when they stay much too long in congress.   VOTER IMPOSED TERM LIMITS!

The Senior Citizens League asserted the pay raise would rank each lawmaker in the top six percent of American households.

“As lawmakers make a big show of forcing auto executives to accept just $1 a year in salary, they are quietly raiding the vault for their own personal gain,” the group’s chairman, Daniel O’Connell, said in a written statement. “This money would be much better spent helping the millions of seniors who are living below the poverty line and struggling to keep their heat on this winter.”

It’s a disgrace and a “slap in the face” to our seniors who have contributed all of their lives to our society.

The group estimates that a senior receiving average benefits will get a $63 monthly increase to just $1,153 per month next year, increasing their annual total to $13,836.

The pay raises come as the economic recession deepens. The economy lost 533,000 jobs in November, bringing the unemployment rate to 6.7 percent.

Notice: back then the unemployment rate was 6.7 percent and it is now, hovering at 10% and America is still “spiraling out of control” thanks to the men and women in congress!

The American people have a very long memory!

    Voter Imposed Term Limits!

  2. A Congress of career politicians will NEVER allow us to constitutionally term limit them by an amendment. But, we can IMPOSE term limits on them in Congressional elections (‘2010, 2012, 2014……):

    1. Never reelect your Congressman or Senator.
    2. Always vote, but only for the strongest challenger , regardless of party .

If Congress has not passed a term limits bill by 2014, repeat this in 2016, 2018….

Our only intelligent choice is to NEVER REELECT anyone in Congress!

The only infallible, unstoppable, guaranteed way to get a truly new Congress, AND a new politics, is NEVER REELECT ANY INCUMBENT! DO IT EVERY ELECTION until term limits is ratified. In other words, don’t let anyone serve more than one term until Congress passes a term limits bill!

NEVER REELECT ANYONE IN CONGRESS. DO IT EVERY ELECTION! … until we ratify term limits.
