Bergen County Let Me Down: Violence against Women Ignored and 4 Women a Day Die

BettyJean Downing Kling

Today as I sat in court awaiting my case I was shocked to see no less than 7 DV cases go unheard because the women did not take the case forward. Whatever happened to the state proceeding without the woman because she may be afraid to testify? I saw officers agree to allow the state to drop the case.
Some abused women came in but said they did not want to proceed, a few called in saying they wanted to drop the charges and some simply did not appear. A parade of men came and went in and out without a care in the world, allegedly having violated the women they are intimate with.
What a horrible shame on two counts. First that the women let these men get away with violating them physically, but what about these punks that hit women and walk in here as if they are not the least bit ashamed of their behavior. I saw one man fondling and kissing her after the court and thanking her- she didn’t look happy about it at all. I saw another woman sitting there looking scared to death and she didn’t leave his side for a second. I could not help but look at these gems and think – gee what a prize that lady just saved from his consequences so he can be free to hurt her again!
On the other hand, I was there to see my case through. Having procured a final protection order from the county seat a few months back after the Judge found him guilty of terroristic threats, I was surprised to learn another county division downgraded the threat to kill case to a simple harassment and sent it back to Lodi to be heard. Funny no one spoke to me about that to be sure I wouldn’t drop the charges – or to be sure how much danger I was in. Did they think a protection order would keep me alive from a lunatic? In any case I was blindsided by that move but I proceeded to trial.
The defendant, my son, was found guilty but because the charge was downgraded he got what amounted to a slap on the wrist and a minimal fine compared to the seriousness of the crime he should have been found guilty of. The judge could only find him guilty of the charges before her and no more.
Downgrading a threat to kill to simple harassment is a serious injustice against me by the county. I did not get my day in court- and if anything happens to me – it is blood on their hands. I did not drop charges – I followed through – the county let me down. This is the reason 4-5 women a day are found dead in the USA- even when they don’t drop the charges and they are willing to show up – they do not get the justice and protection they deserve. Wake up America- a protection order is not a guarantee on saving a life!

WOMEN: A Coalition of Women Organized Mobilized Empowered Nationwide

BettyJean Downing

Women and children are facing brutality and injustice at the hands of family, friends, intimate partners, agencies and the justice system at alarming numbers, it’s a pandemic. Brave individual and independent groups are struggling to be heard, large bureaucracies need the limited funds to fund the bureaucracy while the folks who really need the funds often find the funds depleted to operational costs.

Independent unfunded volunteer groups are springing up more often than not find themselves jockeying for attention to our desperate plight rather than working together for the desperate plight of all women. Rather than being divided on which issue demands more of our attention women need to understand all injustice toward all women and children must be stopped. The injustice of domestic violence, stalking, child abuse, rape, family and divorce court reform, sexism, misogyny, media sexualization and pedophilia, to name a few, affects every woman and child directly or indirectly one way or the other. Women and girls are under attack from every flank, and yet all these groups stand alone rather than uniting nationwide demanding justice for all of womankind in this the great America claiming to be a beacon of women’s rights!

At The Majority United, our only issue is “Women’s rights are human rights.” We know that as citizens of the United States we too have inalienable rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness and we too have the right to a representative government and equal justice and we are not getting it. TMU has formed WOMEN as an umbrella group inviting all groups to unite under the umbrella individually so the majority can show a united front while each group remains itself independent and dedicated to its own cause but bolstered by the strength of a national united women’s non-partisan non- issue group.

Whatever battle women are facing, we know that we are stronger when we have an organization behind us. We are stronger when that organization has no single issue partisan ax to grind but instead is fighting only for human rights and Justice. We know we stand a greater chance of being heard and taken seriously when we are strong. And we know we are stronger when we are united than we are when we are fighting alone! We invite your group to join our women’s coalition of groups united in solidarity of Women Organized Mobilized Empowered Nationwide (WOMEN) working toward justice and human rights for women and children in the United States.

Female: What is she? Not easily defined even by herself.

Another Rant by: BettyJean Kling

What is a female? A Female is depicted by others everyday all day long all over the world. Does anyone anywhere even know who or what a female is anymore? Does a female even know who she is? Ask her – she will tell you who she is to someone else no doubt! Lately it has become vogue to brag about being a mother. ‘As a Mom’, ‘Proud to be a mom’, ‘A Million Moms’ ‘Just a Mom’.

I am one of those and belong to every one of those online groups and darn happy to be a mom a grand mom and a great grand mom and proud to belong to all of the mom groups as well.

I am also a US citizen and proud to be one – and a wife and proud to be one a daughter and proud to be one but I am ultimately a female and when I take away all the other labels –I remain far and away a female. I need to know that as one of 52% of civilization – and of all of the population, I am something unique unto myself as well as a part of something and someone else!

How many of us unique females have no children, husband, siblings, or parents alive. What does that make us– nothings?

I dare say we had damned well better wake up and recognize that we are so much more than someone else’s something, subordinate only to them. As proud as we are to be part of a family, a marriage, and as parents we have forgotten we are in the end individuals.

If you are a religious or God fearing individual- God made you in his image – you are responsible to him for what you do about you too.   Religious or envirionmentalists — as females we are the majority on this earth and as such we have a responsibility to be lights and good stewards and responsible to teach our daughters and our sons by example.  As an example we should not be turning our backs  away from what is wrong but we need to turn against it.

The time is now! There is a war on woman all across this world and it is up to every woman to stand up and say NO! Sadly, we spend less time on the community of women and to helping each other, which would strengthen our causes then we do on fighting each other. Indeed, it takes a village and yet we fight against other never realizing we are our worse enemies when we should be our best warriors.  Think again!

It is up to women to teach our sons and daughters that females are to be highly respected and we are to be accepted just as we are! We are not second-class citizens- not here – not anywhere around the world – let us stand up and start acting like it! We are woman first – not black women – not Hispanic – not gay- not straight – not someone’s wife or daughter first – to our own selves we need to be true!

Ask yourself — What is a female? Make sure you know your worth and be prepared to teach it to others – to your chidren!

Look at your daughters – know what a female is. When you look at your little girl – do you airbrush her perfect? Doesn’t she deserve to be a first class human being or are you raising her to be someone’s something? When you see a report of a wife missing or found dead at the hand of her husband – do you realize that could be your daughter you gave to a husband in marriage? Did you give her as a peice of property? Do you think those parents ever dreamed of such horror? In many religions, men are reared to treat their women this way and  these customs are coming here. Not that our men have not been bad enough here all along.

We are faced with two extremes regarding the treatment and condition of women right here in the US. There is a liberal or a conservative view – Sexualization or Religion both render her less than! Neither extreme is acceptable and we have no right to decide which box is right for your daughters! Human rights belong to every female and each of us is born with inalienable rights. These rights are being abrogated by man and government and it is being tolerated by the majority of our citizens in this the US an otherwise free country.

We the women of the US are not subjects of the government- slaves to our husbands nor are we subject to the churches. We are free human beings, brainwashed into submission by men who we can simply out vote by uniting against them and demanding our civil and human rights!

WHY? Because we women have not stood, up and said NO! We have hidden our eyes from the truth! Women in our society are disrespected and we can stop it now.

Women appear to be brainwashed, given only two choices, Conservative or Liberal- Madonna or the whore. It’s only natural to fear the antithesis of the box we were forced into. If we break out of these boxes and stop fighting for the same booby prizes we can achieve the main goal. Why settle to be with a big wig who can at any time toss us aside when we can be the big wig ourselves? I would rather be in control than behind someone in control of me!

1.) Jessica Alba

Have you wondered how some celebrities manage to keep their seemingly perfect figures after pregnancy? Is it the personal trainers and private chefs that do the trick? Not entirely or perhaps not at all.  It’s the airbrusher! The real Jessica Alba , months after giving birth, is seen airbrushed, note the trimmed waistline and hips.

2.) Beyonce

I wonder why Vanity Fair digitally altered Beyonce’s image to appear several shades lighter on their cover.

3.) Kate Winslet

Although denies any retouching was done for her 2008 Vanity Fair photo shoot, a professional airbrusher interviewed by the Daily Mail disagrees:  “There is no real detail in her face. Any detail or wrinkles have been removed. There are no eye bags, contours and smile lines. Her bottom has been rounded off so it looks nice and pert. I would be very surprised if her bottom was like that naturally.”

4.) Britney Spears

These side-by-side photos were taken within days of one another.

5.) Julia Roberts

The Redbook editors plucked Roberts head from a paparazzi shot taken at the 2002 People’s Choice Awards while her body was borrowed from the Notting Hill movie premiere four years ago. The clipped-together photo is accompanied by a headline that blares, without a trace of irony, “The Real Julia.”

6.) Jennifer Aniston

Wish you could have washboard abs like Jennifer Aniston after the age of 40? America’s favorite Friend does as well. When asked by host Barabara Walters what happened to the modest girl next door we used to love, Jen laughed, “She’s there! Photoshopped!”

7.) Sarah Palin

The body belongs to a 22 year-old woman known only as Elizabeth. An unemployed web site designer from New York City found the four year old pic on Flickr and pasted Gov. Palin’s head on it as a spoof for her Facebook page. And the rest has become as much a part of political yore as Swift Boat and Dukakis in a tank.

8.) Kelly Clarkson

Apparently Kelly Clarkson grew tired of Howard Stern making cracks about her ass and did something about it, or shall I say had her airbrusher do something about it.

The airbrushing later became so pronounced on her new album cover that Clarkson barely recognized herself. On a blog entry she wrote: “Its very colorful and they have definitely Photoshopped the crap out of me . . . Whoever she is, she looks great, ha!”

9.) The Women of the Israeli Cabinet

In a move straight out of Pravda, the Israeli ultra-Orthodox newspaper Yated Neeman airbrushed two female cabinet members out of a picture of the Israeli Cabinet and replaced them with two men not even in the cabinet.  The newspaper claims picturing women violates their laws of modesty but here in the States it simply violates our laws of common decency.

10.) The Dove Soap Women

Remember the Dove Soap campaign featuring “real”, full-figured women instead of the airbrushed, fake supermodels we’ve grown so accustomed to? Even when Madison Avenue ad executives try to keep it real, their itchy airbrush fingers get the best of them.

According to retoucher Pascal Dangin, these ladies were just as fake as the supermodels we so love to poke fun at. “Do you know how much retouching was on that?” he asked. “But it was great to do, a challenge, to keep everyone’s skin and faces showing the mileage but not looking unattractive.”

Gentlemen, next time your lady tells you the Hollywood ideal of beauty is impossible to live up to, believe her. And Ladies next time you think only a trollop posses for these things – think of the Israeli Cabinet members who disapeared.

Please do not write me comments about the women who pose for these- it is easy to blame women and leave the men blameless or to blame men but the truth is this: Sex sells because we have been selling women forever. For all of history we have been selling women- there are more of us then there are of them – let’s just stand up and stop it now when and where we can! ? Start with the advertisers. ‘Boycott them – but do it collectively so one gets hurt badly at a time- one at a time money talks!

What is a Female – do you know? How will you explain it to your 3 year old? Do you want to tell her she must grow up to be a mother even if her body will never make her one? Do you want to teach her to submit to a man who may beat her to death? Do you want to teach your 3 year old boy not to believe what his lying eyes tell him to believe ? She is not what he thinks she is – she is not what you think she is either!

She is a total work of art- she is every bit as valuable as the son you may have bore — act like it- fight for her right to be treated as the whole - human being she is! Do it Now!

“Whore”: The W-word?

Do women see the word “whore” the same as African Americans see the “N-word”?

At Wednesday’s California gubernatorial debate, Tom Brokaw suggested the two were equivalent, asking Gov. Jerry Brown why he had not expressed outrage at his aide’s suggestion they brand Meg Whitman with the term for catering to law enforcement in exchange for an endorsement.

Brown retorted, “I don’t agree with that comparison,” and added a weak apology.

He went on to ask why Whitman wasn’t outraged that her campaign chair had once called Congress “whores” for similar dealings with public employee unions. Whitman strangely called that “a completely different thing.”

Now Salon columnist, Joan Walsh, has asked: Is “whore” the N-word for women?

The fact that no one says “the W-word” to avoid saying “whore” suggests that people don’t find it quite so offensive.

But then, our society is more offended by racism than sexism: People are more upset by racist than sexist jokes.  And few complain about calling women ho’s in rap music because they don’t want to sound racist. But sexist is fine.

Maybe it’s not as offensive. But maybe it should be.

Sexualizing America 4 of 12

Another Rant By: BettyJean Kling

Give me one good reason for these ads? Sex sells? If so what is sexy about women being captured enslaved or bruised? Tell me who is buying these products- they are very expensive products and these are very expensive ads- – this is what we are force feeding our citizens and wondering why our police officers, our lawyers, our judges, our doctors, our men, our boys, our women and our girls are brainwashed to believe about females. See it 24/7 everywhere you look, hear it, all day every day everywhere you go and soon it just becomes normal. Normal to all who see it – live it!

Are the things you see and hear about females really normal? Are these images normal? They are certainly typical these days! Yes they are! The advertisers pay oodles for these ads- they couldn’t unless the product sells- no one wastes millions on ads that don’t work. Why are our females buying this?

They have normalized it! The females who normalize it are getting younger and younger and the males who normalize it is also getting younger and younger. SHAME! These are the doctors, lawyers, judges, police and the men who will be dealing with us and our daughters in the future! And we wonder why we have 16% representation in our government – and why they get away with calling Hillary a Bitch and calling Sarah a Cunt?

And we wonder why men are released after beating their wives and girlfriends? And we wonder why the women drop charges to try and save their lives realizing they will not be taken seriously or be protected by the courts or find safety from the police?

What is a female? Not what you think she is!

For the last few decades we have also been out in the workplace so we define ourselves as teachers, nurses, doctors, lawyers and various other professions. I am a retired Special Education teacher who is a women’s rights activist and blogger.

Let’s see what else might we ordinarily characterize ourselves as? I am a wife and a daughter and proud to be one but I am ultimately a female and when I take away all the other labels –I remain far and away a female.  I need to know that as one of 52% of civilization – and of all of the population I am something unique unto myself as well as a part of something and someone else ! Do you even wonder about the parents who gave that little girl, their daughter, if they ever dreamed this horror? In some religions man are raised to treat their women this way and ladies make no mistake — it is coming here. We are faced with two problems that guarantee it is already here and will be getting Sexualization and/or Religion both render her less than!

Sexualization and radical religion is on the rise , neither is acceptable and we have to do something about it besides blame each other. Get off your high horses forget you differences and join together for the sake of your daughters – don’t decide issues for them INSTEAD -make the world safe for them ALL OF THEM. As it stands right now we are divided over issues and we are willing to throw half of our own kind to the dogs.

Rosa Parks can ‘Rest in Peace’

Another Rant By: BettyJean Kling

The roles of gender and race were delineated when Joe Biden’s Judiciary Committee dismissed Anita Hill’s testimony about Clarence Thomas.

That should have been another reminder, we should have recalled when black men got the vote women did not. We should have figured out right then and there that man was always going to be put first and held higher – too bad our sisters of color did step up and stop it back then. They could have and should have joined their sisters; we all could have fought together for a better life!

The message, loud and clear was, women to the back of the bus. And Rosa Parks must have wondered why it was that she and it was not some he who took that seat at the front that day. Rosa who risked life and limb changed everything. Everything for male blacks and yet her sisters are still left behind, black and white alike! I begin to wonder if some black women don’t mind being slaves so long as they are not black ones. As Harriet Tubman said, “I freed a thousand slaves I could have freed a thousand more if only they knew they were slaves.”

The resulting roles of gender and race became crystal clear when the first historic woman and black man were both vying for office of president in 2008. Again a committee headed by Democrats dismissed the woman, and Hillary Clinton’s historic run was disfavored in preference of a less qualified Barack Obama

And again a woman bravely stood her ground against the machine but this time without the backing of all her sisters and again things changed for black men and again sisters of all colors were left behind black and white alike.

But in the end without the ground swell from The Majority – all our sisters plus men they attempt to pacify us with a Latina SCOTUS, and sprinkle a few more women around the administration. The women’s groups settle for crumbs as they force half of us to fight with the other half over the divisive issue of reproductive rights.

All 52% of us are subject to the very same problems in our daily lives and share all of the same issues such as poverty, lower wages, lack of jobs, lack of child care, illness, lack of health care, we are victims of abuse and are beaten, maimed and killed and raped. Our children are victimized by pedophiles and are kidnapped and killed by drugs or drunk drivers. All of us are under-represented. Does anyone reading this think for one damned moment that a woman is asked before any of these things befall her or her daughter or grand- daughter what political party she belongs to, what church she goes to, or whether she is Pro-Choice or Pro-Life?

We are women first, not Republicans, not Democrats, not white, black, yellow or red. We are from all corners of the world and from every church. We are sisters and the majority of the world’s and America’s population. How many ways shall we be divided?  Were it not for all the ways we can find to divide ourselves from one another – we would be impervious to what they have done and continue to do the majority of the population seemingly with our full knowledge and permission.

Equal Rights means the human right to do any damned thing you want to do without anyone’s permission to choose or decide for you just because you are a woman. Imagine that? Imagine never again having to hear “The first women to …” After all, too many women were the first to do many things and I have never heard anyone say “The first man to ride in the front of a bus…”

BUT now  “the first woman ” has finally won an Oscar for Best Director so I guess Rosa Parks can Rest in Peace.

Plan B

By: BettyJean

Finally, we are getting somewhere with the military! Remember when the Army general commanding U.S. forces in northern Iraq implemented a policy that provided for court-martial and potentially even jail time if service members got pregnant – even if they were married? Not only was there public outrage over such a policy of  denying military service personnel  alternatives (aka: “Prosecution of Unplanned Pregnancy vs Choice in Reproductive Rights”) but, how foolish to implement a policy that would terminate 2 fully trained, committed soldiers with every pregnancy that occurred?

“Plan B One-Step” should have been “Plan A”… General, Sir

According to CNN, it has just been announced by the Department of Defense that all US military health facilities will now carry the emergency contraceptive pill know as “Plan B One-Step”.  Cynthia Smith, spokeswoman from the Defense Dept. told The Associated Press the decision came after a recommendation of an independent panel of doctors and pharmacists in November. Meeting minutes show the Department of Defense’s Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee voted for the allowance 13-2. The Pentagon’s decision comes less than two months after an Army general in Iraq made headlines when he included pregnancy as a punishable offense for both the women in his command and the men who got them pregnant.

Whether motivated by public, political or professional pressure or the embarrassment of implementing a disciplinary policy that makes about as much economic sense as a Health Care Reform plan with fewer services and no reform, it’s apparent that they did this to save face – particular that masculine face that just refuses to get it that every woman’s reproductive rights are a significant part of the world’s population equation. In any event, making Plan B One-Step finally readily available at least allows military women the same choice as non-military women – at least for now.

Why is there always a fight against a basic right called “Choice”?

Although the drug was ready in 1999, it has not been that long (2006) since women over 17 have been able to purchase it from a pharmacist without a prescription.  And there is still the outrageous issue of “conscientious objectors” who refuse to administer or sell the drug – which President Obama appears to fully support. Do these “conscientious objectors” refuse to work in hospitals that perform vasectomies or  for manufacturers of medical supplies used in the procedure, such as sutures, needles, gauze or anesthesia?

Question: How much landscape does the moral compass of any one group get to direct (control and dominate) before the obsession with another human being’s life choices is satisfied?

Answer: Apparently they want to control every square inch of the landscape of “choice” in women’s reproductive health involving preventing, averting or terminating pregnancy – even if it means that other women’ health issues, such as cervical cancer screenings, mammograms, and overall funding for women’ health services are used as the rope in this tug of war over “A Woman’s Right of Choice”.

Getting the Facts Right is also a “Moral Responsibility”

Anti-abortion activists have denounced the use of Plan B One-Step, claiming that the pill’s heavy doses of hormones amount to an abortion. These same detractors are also against any form of birth control whatsoever, deferring to “abstinence only” and having no more compassion for a teen pressured into sex, resulting in pregnancy after unwanted pregnancy, anymore than a  child raped, thus forced into pregnancy  – even if it means death of one or both the mother and child. (While the later may be argued as “rare” in the United States, our voices, as women, carry around the world.  Beyond the borders of our “moral arguments” are cultures where young girls and women look to the United States as the beacon of Human Rights – Women’s Rights – that will someday sweep across their landscapes and set them free from the horrors of oppression, brutality and sexual exploitation  that they face moment to moment in their lives – just because they are women with NO rights!)

And, why are gender-biased, Patriarchal religions still dominating this platform when the consequences are significantly different for women when it comes to reproduction? This is especially true for how gender-biased Catholicism when weighing in on the subject – placing for greater responsibility on women than men. The Catholics  have gone to great lengths to define reproductive development as beginning with the egg and the sperm and that to interfere with conception, in any form, is a form of abortion. From my years of study – I can attest that Catholic reproduction/conception dogma believes that ‘wasting the sperm in masturbation is a sin’.  Yet, where is that public literature? Where are the Pope and the Priests when it comes to publicly speaking out against circle jerks as an abomination to God, at best, and murder at worst?  Did anyone hear about Bishops going to Washington  to lobby for minimizing health care services to every man that jacks offs? No!

Imagine, hearing policy-makers and religious leaders preaching day and night about the immorality if spilling all that precious potential sperm life  in a gym towel, wash cloth or down the toilette! Where are the  Catholic and Protestant churches (that both make up “The Moral Majority”) on expanding the landscape of  the abortion debate to include “Abortion by Ejaculation, Prophylactics and The Last Second Pull Out”?  There isn’t a hell big enough to house such “hopeless, immoral sinners” as those who just can’t seem to leave it alone or get it that it’s abstinence or marital conception only!

Proponents of the “Morning After Pill” such as, Plan B Step-One, argue that such drugs do not cause an abortion, but rather significantly decreases the woman’s chances of becoming pregnant if taken shortly after sex. These drugs are are effective 80% of the time and relatively safe, according to research,. However, lack of information regarding the availability of these drugs has only fueled misinformation about how they work – which  (in Plan B, Plan B One-Step) is by preventing the sperm from reaching the egg and keeping a fertilized egg from attaching to the wall of the uterus (implantation). In others similar drugs, they use a combination of hormones to prevent the sperm from reaching the egg, keep a fertilized egg from attaching to the wall of the uterus,  as well as,  stopping the ovaries from releasing eggs (ovulation) that can be fertilized by sperm.

If preventing sperm and eggs from completing the process of “conception” is to be considered interference with the natural process of reproduction, thus “abortion”, then how can we not view in vitro fertilization just as invasive  and unnatural when it comes to reproduction? How many living eggs die after implantation from failed in vitro fertilization? Is this a form of “abortion”, as well? We need to get our facts straight!

How many traumatized rape victims lives can literally be turned around by this pill if administered as soon after the rape as possible? How many abortions can be eliminated? How can we even argue over a solution that could prevent tossing out a baby by preventing sperm from fertilizing an egg?! Clearly, arguments against this pregnancy-prevention solution is purely grounded in Patriarchal, religious legalism that must be abolished for the sake of women, girls and societies all over the world! This plan is one answer that is a fair solution for both sides of the abortion debate!

Freedom of Choice

I have gathered some information from the Mayo clinic for my readers.  I would suggest that anyone considering Plan B or any other birth Control to do your own research and follow your own church, if applicable (that is also a right of “freedom of choice”)  or do your scientific and medical research instead. In either event – do not let anyone else tell you what to do. Only you have to live with your choice!

Morning-after pill: Emergency birth control

Question

What can you tell me about the morning-after pill? How does it work?

Answer

From Sandhya Pruthi, M.D.

The morning-after pill — a form of emergency birth control — is used to prevent a woman from becoming pregnant after she has had unprotected sex. Morning-after pills are generally considered safe, but many women are unaware that they exist.

Here’s how the morning-after pill works. Human conception rarely occurs immediately after intercourse. Instead, it occurs as long as several days later, after ovulation. During the time between intercourse and conception, sperm continue to travel through the fallopian tube until the egg appears. So taking emergency birth control the “morning after” isn’t too late to prevent pregnancy.

The active ingredients in morning-after pills are similar to those in birth control pills, except in higher doses. Some morning-after pills contain only one hormone, levonorgestrel (Plan B, Plan B One-Step), and others contain two, progestin and estrogen. Progestin prevents the sperm from reaching the egg and keeps a fertilized egg from attaching to the wall of the uterus (implantation). Estrogen stops the ovaries from releasing eggs (ovulation) that can be fertilized by sperm.

The morning-after pill is designed to be taken within 72 hours of intercourse with a second dose taken 12 hours later. Plan B One-Step works with one dose. Side effects may include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, fatigue, dizziness, menstrual changes and headache. According to the manufacturer, the morning-after pill is more than 80 percent effective in preventing pregnancy after a single act of unprotected sex.

Morning-after pills aren’t the same as mifepristone (Mifeprex), the so-called abortion pill. Emergency contraceptive pills such as Plan B prevent pregnancy. The abortion pill terminates an established pregnancy — one in which the fertilized egg has attached to the uterine wall and has already begun to develop.

Plan B is available to women and girls age 17 and older without a prescription at most pharmacies. You must show proof of age to purchase Plan B. For girls age 16 and younger, Plan B is available only with a doctor’s prescription.   Read More…”The Morning After Pill” (http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/morning-after-pill/an00592)

Illinois Victim Reaches Out to Hundreds for Help…No Resources Available

Cross posted from http://www.4survivors.blogspot.com/
Written By: Maria Phelps

Kimberly Calhoun, resident of Rock Island, Illinois, reaches out to hundreds for help for her and her young daughter with no success, and at times, no response. I have been in contact with Kimberly for weeks now, and I personally taught her how to ask for help through my victims’ template (a letter template I have created for victims trying to summarize their problems and ask for help from various organizations can be found on www.survivorsinaction.com or by contacting me directly).  Together, we gathered domestic violence resources, contact information of state representatives, local shelter advocates, along with many other local organizations and advocates that assist with domestic violence and child custody cases. Kimberly followed my instructions and formulated a concise letter that summarized her problems, demanded help and assistance, and listed resources that have failed her. She sent out this letter to hundreds of people that claim to assist domestic violence victims and children in her county and state, but after patiently waiting for a response, many have ignored her cry for help and have turned her away.

Even her Assemblyman, Mike Boland, passed her along to the Chief of Staff, Mike Huntoon, who was less than polite and helpful to her in her time of need.  According to Kimberly Calhoun, (Chief of Staff) Mike Huntoon was “initially rude”, particularly after she gave him a list of all the local and state agencies that have failed her and her daughter when they asked for help. Calhoun stated that he said things like “what else am I supposed to do?, I can’t wave a magic wand and make these agencies work “.

Needless to say, Kim was turned away by her own state representative in Illinois and was unable to find any assistance. As of now, Kimberly has physical custody of her daughter, but her daughter is being mistreated by the father during visitation. This child has disabilities and suffers from diabetes, and while in her father’s care, is given wrong dosages of insulin and her health is being put into jeopardy. As a domestic violence victim, Kim needs three things: a pro bono lawyer, a DV advocate, and Child Protective Services to step in and advocate for her and her child, one would think it would be relatively easy to find some help in her state, but this mother is out of resources and no one can help meet her needs.  With the father demanding full custody of this child, keeping Kim in Family Court, and Child Protective Services in Illinois doing the bare minimum to assist this mother and child, Kim is in dire need of intervention and assistance.

Below is Mike Boland’s contact information, please feel free to express your opinions and support for Kim’s situation.

Springfield Office:

As an Assemblyman, a representative chosen by the people to support the needs of the people, Assemblyman Mike Boland should be assisting this woman and child, seeing that agencies claiming to assist victims do their jobs. Without a magic wand, this man could easily make a few phone calls for this family and put them in contact with someone that could help, as this child is in danger and is at risk. Being a DV survivor myself, I am all too familiar with the “DV runaround” this victim is getting from the masses, and I’ve been turned away in NYS myself, but this woman can’t even get a DV advocate assigned to her case. Unfortunately, there are COUNTLESS agencies offering help to victims of abuse, handing out pamphlets, offering phone numbers to call, but when one actually takes the time to make contact, there is ALWAYS disappointment on the other end–rarely help. I do hope this post reaches many, and I do hope many advocate for Kim in support, and I do hope Illinois steps up their domestic violence services for victims, because as far as I can see, they are almost non-existent.

This afternoon, Kim and I phoned the National Domestic Violence HotlineThe Christian Family Care CenterThe National Child Abuse Hotline, the State ofIllinois Domestic Violence Hotline, and Family Resources of Illinois (could barely get a conscious person on this crisis line)…..no help, no assistance, no DV advocate available, no pro bono attorney, no nothing. This situation is unacceptable, and, unfortunately, the “norm” across the country.

The National Child Abuse Hotline referred Kim to the Ombudsman office (217-524-2029), the State Liaison’s office, and then the Inspector General’s office, which we called immediately asking for intervention and assistance. These are the places to contact when Child Protective Services fails, and we are now waiting for a reply.

According to the State of Illinois Domestic Violence HotlineKim does not live in an area that caters to victims, whereas, if Kim lived in Chicago there would be more resources for her to choose from. That’s the tricky part about being a victim, picking the perfect place for the crime to happen.
